Lakota Creation Myth

The Kaota account of the creation begins with the Supreme Being, Wakan Tanka, whose spirit was in the first god, Inyan. Nothing else existed exceot Han (Black of Darkness). Inyan desired to show his pwers, but there was nothing to exercise them upon, so out of his blood he created the goddess, Maka (Earth) and the blue waters. From the waters the great blue dome of Skan (the Sky) was created, his edge forming the earth's boundary. Skan used his energy to create earthly darkness from Han and then created Wi, the sun from Inyan, Maka, the waters, and himself. He ordered Wi to Shine and the world became hot.

The four gods, Skan, Inyan, Maka, and Wi assembled. Skan, the most powerful, addressed them: "Although we are four we have one source, Wakan Tanka, which no one, not even the gods themselves, can understand. He is God of Gods."
