The Race of Mud

Nü-gua is one of the most popular goddesses and is worshipped both as the intermediary between men and women, and as the goddess who grants children. She grew very lonely. One day she saw her reflection in a pool, which gave her an idea. She scooped handfuls of mud out and molded them into replicas of her own image. The creatures then came to life and kept her company. Soon they traveled off but she could always hear their voices from a distance.

Since this process was too tedious and time-consuming she dipped a rope into mud and then swung it about her. Soon the earth around her was covered with lumps of mud that turned into humans. She then taught them how to reproduce themselves so they could have children.
